EIGHT ON SEPTEMBER EIGHT (2009)
by Regina Kandraska

Four died in Iraq, today...
and four more in Afghanistan -
Four plus four...and how many more?

Who heard their cries?
Who saw their tears, today?
Four plus four...and how many more?

How many lost years of a life does a bullet cost?
Has anyone done the math?
Four plus four...and how many more?

In the marketplace of death,
the barterers juggle lives,
but not their own.
They stay alive on this stage of war,
but each soldier draws a lot.
Four plus four...and how many more?

What does the audience have to say?
And when the curtain falls,
on the final, bloody scene,
who will reap the profits
of this dreadful play?
Four plus four...and how many more?
